All of his life Matthew has worked with people in a variety of medical, charitable and educational environments.
For ten years he worked as a houseparent at A.S. Neill’s famous Summerhill School. His book about his experiences at Summerhill, called ‘A Free Childhood: Self Regulation at Summerhill School’, has been published in England, America and translated into several languages.
He has lectured in a variety of universities and other institutions in Europe and America on working therapeutically with children.
Before training in Craniosacral Therapy Matthew practised and taught as a massage therapist in Suffolk. With an interest in the connection between mind and body Matthew travelled regularly to the Wilhelm Reich Institute of Integrated Therapy in Germany during the 1990’s, to train in Body-Oriented Psychotherapy. More recently he also trained in Core Process Psychotherapy at the Karuna Institute in Devon. He has a psychotherapy practice, which he runs alongside his craniosacral practice.
As well as a busy practice in Bristol, Matthew is a Senior Tutor with the Institute of Craniosacral Studies and a supervisor, approved by the UK Craniosacral Therapy Association.
Along with teaching in Britain he runs advanced courses for Craniosacral Therapists in South Africa. He has a strong commitment to developing Craniosacral Therapy and maintaining high standards of treatment. Matthew’s writings on Craniosacral Therapy and related subjects have appeared in a variety of journals over the years, both promoting the work and exploring its applications.
Matthew has a daughter who had a very happy home birth and he is especially interested in working with babies and children to help them maintain their inherent capacity to live fully and in good health.
For several years he worked closely with the Special Care Unit at Ipswich Hospital, treating children with problems associated with premature birth, such as cerebral palsy. His work with adults ranges from working with purely structural problems, through to personal process and the resolution of shock and trauma.
Away from work Matthew has a strong meditation and Tai Chi practice. He balances work with a love of home, family and the various creatures that inhabit his back garden.
